Keep it Real Math Stories from Real Life Vol. 1 (Grades K-6)
How many times have students asked, “When am I ever going to use this?” While math is everywhere in real life, students need opportunities to see that connection. This collection of passages brings math to life by placing skills in real-world contexts, moving beyond traditional textbook problems.
Volume 1 includes passages across five domains—Addition/Subtraction, Multiplication/Division, Place Value, Fractions, and Measurement—plus a bonus Geometry passage. Each domain features four passages written at varying grade levels, with reading levels adjusted accordingly. Domain overviews outline questions, answers, standards, and targeted skills, making it easy to support differentiated instruction, such as center-based activities.
Volume 2 covers the remaining domains: Geometry, Number System, Ratio/Proportion, Expressions/Equations, and Statistics/Probability, typically taught in grades 3–9.
These passages are part of the Degrees of Math Power (DMP) assessment package, designed to be used formatively to gauge students’ instructional levels across all 10 domains prior to instruction. For more information, please contact Educational Vistas.
